Noth Dakota State

North Dakota Like many other states in the U.S., such as Oklahoma and Arkansas, North Dakota was originally settled by various Native American tribes. They were the first farmers in the region and were of the Mandan Indian tribe, known as the agricultural tribe, along with the Hidatsa and Arikara groups. There were also a large number of nomadic and semi-nomadic Indian tribes including Cree, Cheyenne, Crow, Sioux, Chippewa, and Assiniboin that came to live in North Dakota. The many intriguing facts about North Dakota illustrate the time of these early descendants through a more modern, yet still captivating state.

The Louisiana Purchase had a great impact on the history of North Dakota. After completion of the agreement in 1803, the northwest portion of North Dakota officially belonged to the United States, while the southeast area was later acquired from the British. The U.S. owned the region as part of new borders established in the year when the 49th parallel was set as the international border between Canada and the United States. Other significant facts about North Dakota from the very early nineteenth century regard the famous Lewis and Clark expedition. The expedition spent the winter with the Mandan tribe, and both the Hudson’s Bay Company and the North West Company created prominent trading posts in the Red River Valley.

With the invention of the paddlewheel steamboat in 1832, transportation of supplies along the Missouri River became easier. These Red River carts helped greatly to transport supplies, traveling west through the prairies of Minnesota, returning to the Mississippi River with bundles of costly pelts. The Mandan tribe was devastated by smallpox carried into North Dakota by new settlers around this time.

In 1878 the first cattle ranch was established on the vast, rich land. This advancement was a monumental step in the history of North Dakota for settlers who had also started reaping the benefits of railroad construction in the early 1870s. The building of the railroads continued throughout the 1870s, connecting far-reaching areas such as current-day Williston, in the western part of the state, to the eastern region where Fargo and Grand Forks meet the Minnesota border. With this new source of transportation, thousands of European immigrants (mainly Czechs, Scandinavians, and Germans) were drawn to the state and wove their influences into North Dakota history. Primarily, they worked the prairie wheat fields financed by Europeans, and on their own farms with their families. It’s these historical facts about North Dakota which account for some of the most important expansion on state record.

In 1881 official statehood was attained for North Dakota. With farming as the primary means of survival, there was discontent over the way the state’s grain marketing was handled by the larger crop interests. Along with the European immigrants came the European practice of agricultural cooperatives, which helped establish small grain elevators through collective cooperatives. This didn’t prove effective, and the farmers continued pressing for state-controlled grain elevators. During the congress of 1915, the Non-Partisan League of North Dakota’s objectives were laid out. They included state-owned and state-controlled flour mills and grain elevators, farm improvements that were not taxed, state-inspected grain, and credit banks created specifically to aid farms at a minimum cost.

To ring in the New Year, many Atlanta residents like to head to big events to celebrate with the rest of their friends and family. Every year on New Year’s Eve around thirty bands, classic cars, and floats parade their way down Peachtree Street to International Blvd to Centennial Olympic Park and then ending at the Georgia World Congress Center. The Parade helps the city celebrate the two college teams that will be playing for the Chick-fil-A Bowl title.

The Hyatt Regency Hotel in Atlanta is said to have one of the largest New Years Eve celebration in the city. The celebration will take place in different rooms throughout the hotel. Their Centennial Ballroom is the largest ballroom in the city and will feature live music by three regional and national bands. Other rooms will be themed like the ‘Atlanta Idol Stage’, the ‘Punchline Comedy Lounge’ that will showcase four comedians and a ‘Bowl Game’ room where guests can watch the Bowl games on large screen televisions.

If you’re in the mood to listen to music, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra will have their New Years Eve celebration. A classy way to ring in the New Year as two-time Grammy Award-winner Sylvia McNair returns to Symphony Hall with selections from the Great American Songbook including Irving Berlin, Rodgers and Hammerstein and more. Michael Krajewski leads the Orchestra in selections of your favorite light classics to round out this special evening.

Atlanta’s New Years Eve Ultimate Block Party downtown draws thousands each year. The event will feature live musical performances by local artists and musicians, as well as fireworks at midnight to help ring in the New Year. The Underground Atlanta is the official place to see the Peach Drop at midnight.

If a nice dinner and festive atmosphere are more your speed and you don’t want to be locked into one enclosed space, the restaurants of the Downtown Atlanta are your best bet. How to Leash Train Your Puppy

How to Leash Train Your Puppy

Having a dog as a companion can be one of the most rewarding things life has to offer. The unconditional love a dog may offer is comparable to nothing else in the world. As a dog owner, however, you have many responsibilities beyond feeding and sheltering your dog. A responsible dog owner trains his or her dog to be a well behaved member of the canine community. One behavior that dogs must learn is how to walk on a leash. Dogs are not born knowing how to do this, so it is your responsibility to teach your dog proper leash walking etiquette. If you have a hyper puppy on your hands, this may sound like a monumental task. But follow the steps below and you will find walking a well trained dog to be one of life’s greatest pleasures.

Step One – As soon as you welcome a new puppy into your home, get the puppy used to wearing a collar. You want your puppy to be comfortable wearing a collar so when it is time to begin leash training, the whole procedure of collar wearing and leash attachment won’t be a foreign process. Make sure the collar you choose is appropriate for the size of your puppy. Many puppies will try to scratch at a new collar or roll around in attempt to get the collar off. This is normal and the behavior will go away once your puppy is used to wearing a collar.

Step Two – After your puppy is accustomed to his or her collar, you can attach a leash to it so he or she may get used to that as well. Again, when you are trying to leash train your dog, you do not want the novelty of a leash to be a distraction. So let your puppy get used to the leash by letting him or her wear it around, even dragging it around the house a bit. Just be sure to supervise the puppy at all times while the leash is being worn because you would not want the leash to get hung up on something and the puppy to get trapped or injured.

Step Three – Now it is time to pick up the leash and take a few short walks. Praise the puppy and offer treats when he or she walks with you. If the puppy pulls on the leash, do not yank or pull the leash back towards yourself. Simply stop walking and, while still holding onto the leash, summons the puppy back to your side. It is also important to remember not to keep walking if the puppy pulls on the leash. By continuing to walk while the puppy is pulling on the leash, you will train the puppy to pull on the leash when he or she wants to go somewhere or in a specific direction. This is the exact behavior you want to avoid and extinguish immediately. Remember, your goal is to have a puppy walking next to you with a loose hanging leash.

Christmas in Nashville

With the Christmas holidays almost upon us, there will be plenty of annual winter events to enjoy in Nashville. If you are considering a move to Nashville, now is the time to buy. Whether you are in the market for a home in the city or a home in the suburbs, then Nashville has something for everyone’s price range and lifestyle.

Christmas is a special time in Nashville with plenty of festive activities to enjoy the holiday season. Strike up the band for Nashville’s Annual Christmas Parade. This year’s parade continues an exciting Nashville tradition of a nighttime parade! This family-friendly event will include live performances, floats and a visit from Santa.

Every year at this time the arts provide fantastic opportunities for adding some music and culture to the enjoyment of the holiday season. The theaters, concerts, symphony, and ballet will put you in the spirit of the season with both professional and local talent. It wouldn’t be Christmas without going to see a production of the Nutcracker. The Nashville Ballet at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center is a holiday tradition featuring professional dancers and over 200 local youth cast members will be dancing in this season’s production. Finding just the right tree might be a special activity to do with the family. In Nashville, try the Country Cove Christmas Tree Farm or Big Spring Tree Farm to find the perfect tree.

Another excellent event is a visit to the Nashville Zoo and the Zoo’s historic home, the Croft House. To celebrate the season, the historic landmark will be decorated with greenery, ribbon, and vintage decorations that belonged to Margaret and Elise Croft, former tenants of the Grassmere property whose family owned the land and home for five generations. A visit to the Croft House is included in your admission ticket to the Zoo. For a unique experience, a visit to ICE! Nashville’s Wonderful Winter Wonderland is an incredible display of artistry. The exhibit displays larger-than-life, three-dimensional ice monuments and colorful ice sculptures. The ice creations include thrilling ice slides, all enhanced by dramatic lighting and special effects. To stay comfortable, guests are issued complimentary warm parkas with hoods.

There are many family-friendly activities to enjoy this time of the year. In nearby Lebanon, take the family to see The Festival of Lights. For more than 12 years, the James E. Ward Agricultural Center hosts a holiday tradition. This driving tour will have your eyes twinkling and features thousands of lights, animated displays. Children will delight in all the holiday décor and there is even a post office box to drop off a letter to Santa.

Nashville may not have the snowfall that signals Christmas is here, but the spirit of Christmas is alive and well. Downtown will be lit up with festive lights in addition to all the homes in the area. Whether you’re taking in a parade to see Santa or ice skating, seeing the Nutcracker or finding that perfect Christmas tree, there is something for everyone to celebrate this time of the year. Living in Nashville allows you to enjoy all the seasons without any of the inconveniences.

Finding the Best Bed for Your Small Dog

Best Bed for Your Small Dog

When I first got my small dog, I spent weeks searching for the perfect bed for her to enjoy. Of course, I wanted her to be as comfortable as possible in her new home and I knew a big step towards that would be a dog bed that she would be happy with. There was only one problem with the dog bed I chose; my dog wasn’t quite as happy with it as I was. When you set out to buy your small dog a bed, remember that even though you’re the one doing the purchasing, it is your beloved dog that has to sleep on your final decision.

There are some very basic, essential tips to keep in mind to ensure that your dog absolutely loves his or her new dog bed. The first is to pay careful attention to the dog bed’s height. This point is especially important for owners of small breed dogs. You don’t want a situation where your dog is forced to jump into bed every night. It may be amusing to watch at first and might even be fun for your dog to jump on occasion, but having to leap into bed every night will get annoying for your dog to have to endure over time. Also, in all seriousness, your dog can sustain needless and sometimes serious injuries by falling from a bed that’s too high for him or her, especially small breed or toy dogs.

Second, be wary of strong odors in bed materials. Dogs have highly developed and sensitive senses of smell, much more sensitive than human beings have. Therefore, when you’re picking out a bed for your dog, avoid beds made of materials which have strong and overpowering smells. For example, certain woods, such as cedar and cinnamon, may smell good to you, but may be too pungent for your dog. On a related note, be mindful of the bedding you choose.

The comfort of your small dog should be paramount. If you live in a colder climate, opt for heavier materials, such as lamb’s wool, which absorb heat and keep your dog warm and cozy. If you live in a more temperate zone, opt for lighter fabrics, like cotton hybrids, which will keep your dog cool and comfortable. Most online stores, like swankpets.com, have a wide variety of small dog beds to choose from and you will be able to find the bed that fits your dog and its needs best. If you have a brand new small breed puppy, a blanket for the dog bed would be a wise investment too in order to keep your puppy warm through the night.

When training your dog to use his or her bed, don’t be a pushover. Dogs can be very persuasive and persistent when they want something. When you get a new dog bed, there might be times when you have to be quite stern to get your dog to stay in its bed. Ultimately, dogs are creatures of habit, so it’s important to be consistent and firm when training them to use their beds. They will love you for it in the long run.

How Big is Your Family?

How Big is Your Family?

Most Americans know who their grandparents were, and many knew their great grandparents. If they are asked the names of their great, great grandparents, however, the vast majority of people will be unable to give an answer. If they do know who they were, then it is likely that they have either conducted or viewed a genealogical study of their family.

Genealogy is the study of family lineage. It traces the generations back through time, and then forward again to the present day. It can expand our knowledge of current relatives by revealing distant cousins that we never knew existed. For even as our family trees grows broader as we look backward in time, each of the old branches that we uncover grows equally broad as it approaches the present day.

Think about just a few generations back. Did your great, great grandparents have brothers and sisters? Did they have children? Did their children have children who also had children? How many unknown cousins come from going back just one more generation beyond that? If you remember that you had sixteen different great, great grandparents alone and that the number doubles with each further generation before them, you can see just how quickly the numbers mount up to thousands of cousins living in the present day, most entirely unknown to each other.

During the last presidential election it was said that Barack Obama and Dick Cheney were distant cousins. Before that someone discovered a similar relationship between John Kerry and George W. Bush. While it may take few more than six degrees of separation, many of us would be surprised at the number of famous or recognizable names to whom we are related if we performed a complete genealogical survey of our ancestry and the other descendents of our ancestors.

There are companies that specialize in conducting genealogical studies for a fee. These companies often have teams working on each project and can turn in results in a relatively short amount of time, often just a couple weeks. Fees may depend upon how many generations you want traced, or they may have a flat fee to trace back as far as they can. Often they will provide not just a list of ancestors, but a detailed report and an artistic rendering of the client’s family tree suitable for framing.

It is also quite possible to learn about the techniques of genealogical research and to conduct one’s own study. It often takes much longer to conduct the study by oneself. There may be a wait of days or weeks for a reply to a written inquiry which reveals only one more link in the chain. Those who do undertake their own genealogical review often find that it is not the end result so much as the joy of the process itself that is the most rewarding.

Either way, finding out the details of our family tree and the extent of our modern day relations can be an eye-opening experience.

Your Newborn and Baby Scales

Brining home a newborn can be exciting and exhausting at the same time. If you’re a first time parent, it can be a challenging and rewarding period. In your babies first year, you’ll probably spend so much time at the doctor’s office that he/she will feel like part of the family.

At your first visit, you can expect your Physician to assess your baby’s growth, update their immunizations, and address any concerns you might have about development, sleeping patterns and much more. One of the first things the Nurse will perform is a head circumference, height and especially weight. A special doctor scales or baby scale is used that provides an accurate readout of the baby’s current weight. Many babies lose weight in their first couple of weeks of life, but this common and no need for concern. In general, birth weight doubles in the first five to six months of life.

Baby scales are made to fit the size and shape of a baby. Weighing a baby is no easy task. First, parents are asked to remove all clothing to get an exact reading of their weight. Newborns tend to not like be without clothing and being placed on a cold hard surface. That is why it’s important for a Physician to choose a baby scale that is comfortable. In addition, if you are really lucky and the baby is asleep, getting an accurate reading can be a snap. However, once those clothes come off, more than 90% will moving around uncomfortably, so it’s important that the scale they use be sensitive to pressure fluctuation.

A few of the baby scales you will see in most Physician offices today are the Detecto 8450 Digital Infant and Baby Scale and the Detecto 8432CH Digital Tot Weigher. The 8450 is extremely lightweight is a portable scale. This scale has padded side rails and handle covers that are slightly contoured to ensure that the baby will be cradled comfortably and securely while being weighed. The 8432CH model has inclined seating with a soft foam padded seat for the comfort of the infant. The padding is removable for easy cleaning and it has a digital that has the ability to give pound and kilogram readings.

Getting an accurate reading is very important for babies in their first year. Poor weight gain and slowed growth in infancy are associated with developmental delay and increased risk for diabetes in adult life. So, it’s important to effectively measure growth and weight to ensure nutritional adequacy.

With all the guidance from your family, friends and Pediatrician, you are sure to make it through the first year with flying colors.

Doctor’s offices and pharmacy’s use analytical balances, or scales, to measure out medicine that requires extreme precision.

Search Engine Ranking

Search Engine Ranking

To determine where your website should rank for a given search term, the major search engine consider a variety of factors. The specific formulae are kept secret so that no one can game the system. The one thing that is clear is that the rules keep changing and evolving as the search engines get more sophisticated.

It used to be that the search engines relied for some of the ranking, on Meta Tags, the part of the website’s html code in which they say what the topic of the site is. Of course, every website that had anything to sell would claim that it was related to every popular topic imaginable in an effort to gain more visibility and more traffic.

The search engines also looked for the use of the key word on the web page, figuring that the more it was used, the more likely it was that the page was really about that topic. That, predictably led to a practice called keyword stuffing in which website creators would simply load up a page with the keyword for which they wanted a good ranking. Sometimes they would even repeat the word over and over again in a font color that was the same color as the background, making it invisible to website visitors, but showing up for the search engine crawlers.

Keyword frequency still plays a part in search engine rankings, but it is one factor among many, and search engines may even penalize websites that have keywords used with a higher frequency that is normal for ordinary text. They also look for the context in which those keywords are used through what is termed Latent Semantic Indexing. If the keyword in question, for example is sunglasses, the search engine’s ranking algorithm will look for the word sunglasses being used with a certain frequency and in certain parts of the page, and they will also look for related words or phrases, so inclusion of terms like lens, ultra-violet rays, vision, polarized, sunlight, glare, and longer relevant phrases like protect your eyes, reduce solar glare, and so forth would increase the site’s ranking as well.

Another factor used to determine a website’s value to those searching for particular terms is third party recommendations. On the internet, these recommendations take the form of links from sites with related content. The more links there are, especially from websites that are popular or highly ranked themselves, the greater the perceived value of the original site. Reciprocal links are discounted since many website owners would trade links with other sites in a bid to fool the search engines.

There are many other factors in determining a website’s search engine ranking and the rules are in a constant state of flux as the search engines try to stay one step ahead of those looking to rig the results in their favor. Having rich, relevant content and that is likely to be of interest to those searching for your chosen keywords is the best strategy for obtaining a good ranking.

To Sleep or Not to Sleep – With the Baby

Sleep with Baby

Over the last few decades, most of the experts have said that letting your baby sleep in bed with you is a bad thing to do. Yet, every new mom knows, especially if she breastfeeds her baby, that he is not going to fall asleep, nor will he stay asleep, unless the source of his nourishment is firmly fixed where it belongs – in his mouth.

With the Baby Mother may walk him to sleep, which works until she is so weary she cannot stand up. She may rock him to sleep, sometimes accompanied with her singing. This works until he gets restless and wants to get down on the floor to play. That is what my daughter liked to do at two o’clock in the morning, after waking me from the only sleep I had been able to get all day. Then of course, the mother can nurse her infant until he just dozes off, and gently, oh so gently, ease her nipple out of his mouth, lay the dear baby down in his own little bed, put the blanket over him just so, turn out the light, tiptoe out the door, and listen to him howl in rage.

He is not where he thought he was. The world has insulted him. The world is unfair, and he will make certain everyone in it knows this.

"Let him cry it out," my friends and in-laws advised. I was generally good for not much more than ten minutes of that. From the time my children were two months old, they could belt out their protests for hours. It was a matter of who had the stronger character, and generally I lost such tugs-of-war.

Yes, a screaming baby may well make the ugliest sound in the world. Our first instinct is to do anything in our power to calm the infant down. We need to remember that what has been called the ‘family bed,’ is not necessarily wrong, just foreign. People in other parts of the world routinely have their children in bed with them. The very notion that anyone should sleep alone would appear to be a form of torture to them. Their children grow up healthy and feeling loved and accepted in ways most of our children may not.

Most of us want to maintain those private times with our husbands, keeping them absolutely private. Yet still, the infant wails in the night, and will not be comforted except with the warmth and nourishment only his mother can give him. The plush bear in his crib can only offer so much comfort. Should we be made to feel guilty for permitting ourselves to fall asleep with our infant nestled beside us? Some of my most precious memories of my children are of those times when, weary from the day, I curled around my soft warm baby, and let him nurse until we had both drifted off to sleep.

This is not to say that my babies did not have their own beds and their own rooms. It does mean that no one rule is right for all parents and all children at all times. We have to use those wonderful minds God gave us and make the best decisions for ourselves and our children that we can.

Development of Physical Skills

Special Senses of the Newborn

While your baby is busy growing taller, gaining weight and cutting teeth, he will also be learning how to interact physically with his environment. That is not to say that your baby’s physical development does not begin until after birth. No doubt you were well aware of your infant’s intra-uterine acrobatics.

During the first three months of your baby’s life, however, reflexes govern much of his behavior. As those newborn reflexes fade, they are replaced by more purposeful movements. As he gains strength and coordination in his muscles, your baby is able to explore and manipulate things in his environment. Each day, he moves more competently.

Physical development id divided into two categories: fine motor and gross motor. Fine motor skills require precise coordination of the small muscles. Acquisition of the hand-eye coordination is the focus of fine motor development. Gross motor skills are governed by larger, stronger, less exacting muscles. These skills include holding up the head, sitting, crawling, and walking.

Acquisition of developmental skills occurs in an orderly, predictable sequence. The precise timing of the mastery of any one skill, though, is subject to much normal variation-something to keep in mind when you are tempted to label your baby as “early” or “late” in development.

Each baby approaches the world with his own unique style. Resist comparing your child with your friend’s children. When you hear that another child is walking at nine months, don’t despair because your child is still perfecting his crawl. Instead, focus on his special talents. For instance, your baby may be much better than another at picking up and examining small objects. No matter when it occurs, celebrate your child’s every accomplishment with him.

Physical development follows three general patterns.

  • Muscular development progresses from head to toe. In other words, your baby will learn to lift and hold up his head before his torso is strong enough to maintain a sitting posture.
  • The strength and coordination of the limbs begins close to the body and moves outward. Your baby will coordinate his arm movements at the shoulder, then the elbows, then the wrists. Skillful manipulation of the fingers comes last.
  • Motor responses are general at first. Later they become more specific. For example, if you hold a red ball before your baby when he is three months old, he may smile, wave his arms and legs, and finally make an attempt to swipe at the ball with one or both arms. A few months later, he may still swipe at the ball, but will quickly, and deliberately grasp it with one hand.

Attracting Top Talent in a Tight Jobs Market

When the economy grows worse, many companies are forced to consider lay-offs and job reductions. The goal of reducing the workforce is to increase productivity, or, in other words, to do more with fewer people. Two primary ways to accomplish this goal are to make sure that the people you retain are focused on strong value add tasks that relate as strongly as possible to your core business goals and to make sure that those people working for you are the sort of highly competent professionals who make a habit of outperforming their peers.

Even when workforces are being reduced, there is still a need to replace some workers in key positions as they retire, take positions elsewhere, or move on for other reasons. Often, during times of high unemployment, there are many applicants for few positions. Some companies narrow their search efforts in this climate, others broaden them. Because good jobs may be harder to find, companies that broaden their searches may find top prospects in other regions of the country are more willing to relocate for the right position than they would be during an up job cycle. For these aggressive recruiting companies, combing through a larger pool of applicants often results in finding candidates with higher qualifications.

At the same time, because of the staff reductions and lean workforce, it may be more difficult for companies to focus on offering relocation packages that can make the difference between acceptance and rejection of a job offer for that highly qualified candidate. Companies may be tempted to offer a simple cash reimbursement for relocation expenses because the administrative load will be lighter. However, this is just shifting the effort onto another employee’s shoulders, namely your new hire. The new hire is perhaps the least qualified to deal with the minutia of relocation details. He is not an expert in relocation, he is completely unfamiliar with the area, and he really needs to concentrate on learning the ropes for his new position.

Instead, the smart choice is to contract with a specialist like Wynne Residential Corporate Housing. With a single phone call to Wynne, your HR professional can make all the necessary arrangements. Wynne’s staff will take it from there. They’ll contact the incoming employee and make all the temporary housing requirements necessary. They’ll provide a fully furnished apartment, complete with kitchen utensils, bed linens, and everything else needed to make the transition to the new living space as seamless as possible for the new employee. Even such potentially troublesome details as establishing telephone service and other necessary utilities is completely taken care of by Wynne Residential, leaving your new employee not only more comfortable, but completely free to focus on providing your company with the productivity for which you hired them.

When the job market tightens, your company has the opportunity to add top quality personnel. Using a professional relocation facilitation company like Wynne Residential to get those employees properly situated in temporary corporate housing, not only increases the likelihood of those highly desired employees accepting your offer, but helps them to become more productive sooner.

Temecula is Horse Country

Temecula is Horse Country

People familiar with the area know the oft-repeated phrase “Temecula is wine country” because of its expansive vineyards and nationally famous wineries. Those even more familiar with the area might be heard to say “Temecula is Horse Country.”

Temecula Valley’s gentling rolling hills and open terrain make it ideal for horseback riding. When you add the beautiful year round weather of sunny southern California you have an unbeatable combination. Locals are well aware of these conditions and the valley is full of equestrians.

There are more than 20 working horse boarding and training facilities within an hour of Temecula that give evidence to the popularity of horse riding among residents of Temecula. The available boarding options include small private barns renting out just a couple stalls to larger facilities like Horse Gate Stable in the La Cresta area of Murrietta that offers a range of top quality arenas and training pens and the availability of an on-site FEI level instructor for those interested in competition riding. Others, like the Blue Fox Farm offer hunter and jumper training.

Residents and tourists who don’t own their own horses, often take a day out to visit one of the ranches that offer trail horse rides through the hills and valleys. One of the most well known horse riding options is Wine Country Trails by Horseback which offers guided trail rides for riders as young as seven years old who have some riding experience. Whispering Meadows Ranch also offers guided trail rides, as well as riding instruction for those looking to improve upon their equestrian skill set.

For those who prefer to board and exercise their horses on their own property, the greater Temecula Area offers a number of horse properties for sale. Realtors like Bob Bodemer and Rachelle Wren of Temecula Area Homes know the area and can locate properties sure to please any horse and its owner. Several of the communities around Temecula have zoning restrictions which restrict lot sizes to generous parcels of five acres or more, providing room for horses without getting too close to the neighbors.

For those horse lovers coming to Temecula from northern climates, the opportunity to ride in comfort all year round is a very welcome benefit to living in the Temecula region. The same mild weather that makes the Temecula Valley ideal for growing wine grapes, also makes it an absolute paradise for horse riding. Local events like the International Jazz Festival and the Temecula Valley Balloon and Wine Festival add color and flair to the area for both residents and visitors alike. Riding through the valley trails during the balloon festival offers the best of both worlds as riders watch the great hot air balloons rise into the skies in flocks. Those who venture up in the balloons get a great bird’s eye view of the valley and its riding trails.

It’s true that Temecula is Wine Country, but don’t forget Temecula is Horse Country, too.

Woodies on the Beach

Woodies on the Beach

A woodie is the name used by hobbyists to refer to vintage automobiles whose body is made of wood. The majority of these wood-bodied cars were made in the 1950’s and earlier, and were originally built as a way to reduce the cost of the car. Earlier versions had metal panels covering the wood frame, but these were simply eliminated to lower production costs. These cars were often larger station wagon models and were quite popular among surfers in the 1960’s who found the cars big enough to carry surfboards and requiring only basic woodworking skills to get them looking good again. As a result, there is probably no other type of car that is so closely associated with a certain lifestyle as the woodie is to the surfing community.

Today, there are owners groups around the country who get together to show off their cars. One of the largest gathering of woodies is held each year in Encinitas, California. Known as the Wavecrest Woodie Meet, this event is held each year on the third Saturday of September at Moonlight Beach in Encinitas. Wavecrest Woodie Meet is organized by the San Diego Chapter of the National Woodie Club.

This year, the meet has been expanded to a multiday event running from September 17th through September 20th. An estimated 250-300 woodies will be on display to the public on the 19th at the Moonlight Beach parking lot where, in addition to live entertainment, prizes will be awarded to the events top woodies. The next day, the San Diego Woodies are inviting woodie owners to join in a cruise up the coast highway. Those interested in participating should meet at the Encinitas City Hall at 8:00 AM.

The event seeks to recreate a little of the old care-free days of the1960’s surfer scene so those visiting should expect to get their fill of Beach Boys and Jan & Dean tunes, including the song Surf City which refers to the woodie in its lyrics and of course, Surfin’ USA which was written about surfing in Encinitas.

Although no longer being made, woodies were once held in such high regard, that even well into the 1970’s many higher end station wagons were produced with fake wood paneling designed to make them look like updated versions of the old woodies of the 1950’s and before.

Although, Encinitas and other surfing destinations may have a higher population of woodies than the rest of the country, woodies can be spotted at most vintage car meets all over the country. While the majority of National Woodie Club chapters can be found in California, it truly is a national organization with clubs in New England, the District of Columbia, Pennsylvania, and many more locations that are far removed from the beaches of California.

Still, though, Encinitas is one of the epicenters of the surfing culture and remains a popular destination for surfers from all over the country. Many of them are loading up their boards in their woodies and making the trip out for the Wavecrest Woodie Meet.
